“But only a few things are necessary, really only ONE –
for Mary has chosen the good part,
which shall not be taken away from her.”
We remember this story in Luke 10 :41- 43
When Jesus was visiting His friends in Bethany;
Martha was concerned about preparations for the meal-
and complained to Jesus,
about her sister Mary’s lack of interest in helping her.-
Instead of sitting – Listening to Jesus.
Jesus answered Martha –
“Martha, Martha, – you are so bothered about so many things.
But only a few things are necessary- really only one.”
What is “that only one” element?
One thing – when you have a child on drugs!
One thing – when you have just lost your job
and have a mortgage to pay!
One thing – when your daughter is getting married-
and you have a thousand preparations to attend to!
One thing – when a family member is terminally ill!
Is Jesus unreasonable? Is He exaggerating?
The one thing Jesus is talking about is –
our Salvation and our destiny.
It over shadows everything else.
When we make this our only ‘one thing’ – Anxiety will fade;
Faith and confidence will not only survive but flourish.
We develop a calm trusting spirit- Faith displaces fear.
Does it then mean that we need not be bothered
about the other things mentioned? – Not really!!
But “the one thing – the only one”-
is our relationship with Christ.
He uses this “one thing” example –
when He refers to the birds of the air-
who do not sow; reap; or store up- for future use.
If our Father looks after them – how much more will HE care for us?
What about our anxiety about clothes? –
Jesus said, “Consider the ‘lilies of the field’ -how beautiful they are!
So- just lay down all your cares of this life- at His feet –
Just trust Him.
“For this reason I say to you,
do not be anxious for your life………
Is not life more than food,
and the body more than clothing?”
Matthew 6 : 25.
Wishing you all- God’s care this Sabbath.
