“God- The Holy Spirit…..”

But you shall receive power when the Holy spirit has come upon you:
and you shall be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, and all Judea and Samaria,
and the end of the earth.” Acts 1 : 8

Something happened in an upper room in Jerusalem  nearly 2,000 years ago,
that launched the outreach of the ‘message’ from Jerusalem-
and right down to the ends of the world.
Before Jesus left His disciples, He promised He would send
The Comforter- The Holy Spirit.

Then the disciples  with the women
and Mary the mother of Jesus and His brothers
– the number was about one hundred and twenty people
gathered in an upper room in Jerusalem just as Jesus asked them to do
-so that they would receive the Holy Spirit.
They continued in one accord with prayer and supplication.
And the Holy Spirit like tongues of fire came down on them- resting on their heads.
And they were given power to heal and teach and preach in ‘tongues’
and all manner of miracles.

The “Holy Spirit” –
He is like ‘water‘- cleansing, refreshing, abundant and freely given.
He is like ‘fire’ – purifying, illuminating and searching.
He is like the ‘wind’ – independent, powerful, observable in its efforts.
He is like ‘oil’ – healing, comforting, penetrating, reducing friction and troubled waters.
He is like the ‘rain and dew‘  –  refreshing and abundant.
He is like a ‘dove’ – gentle, peaceful, innocent, forgiving,
And like a ‘seal‘ – impressing, securing and having authority.
The Holy Spirit is like a ‘voice’.  Before this event-
‘The Holy Spirit’ communicated to the people through Prophets.
He is  the third part of the God Head –
Speaking in a ‘still small voice’ to us today.

As Elijah hid in a cave – he heard God through a “still, small voice’.
He also experienced an earthquake,
a wild raging tempest and a sweeping mass of flame.
It was also the same when God met with Moses
and when he gave him the “Commandments”- there was thunder,
lightening, the sound of the trumpet and smoke on the mountain.

What are the characteristics of the Holy Spirit –
HE is more than a power or an influence. He is a person-
He was at creation- “The Spirit of God hovering over the face of the waters” {Genesis 1:2}
Christ comments – “He will teach you all things.”{John 14:26}
“But you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”{v 17}

At Jesus’ baptism God clearly manifested Himself in ‘three persons’
– the Father spoke from heaven;
Jesus stood in the River Jordan;
and the holy Spirit descended in the form of a dove. {Matthew 3: 16-17}
The Holy Spirit knows the things of man and of God.
He has power to distribute “spiritual gifts.”

Because He is a Person-
He has the capacity to be grieved, lied to-
He can teach, to know and to will.
The Father and Son sent the Holy Spirit
to plead with us to repent and accept eternal life.

“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God,
by whom we were sealed for the day of redemption.” Ephesians 4:30
